Picture of the Week -- 0007.22

Vulcan Susan

A fan drew this for me back in the very early '80s. I was always an admirer of the late astromoner, Carl Sagan -- but on an intellectual level, of course. I have no idea who did this drawing for me, but I love what she/he did -- thanks for making me look so good! Now I know what I would look like as a Vulcan, and of course, it IS only logical!

This picture of Richard Arnold and me was taken a short time after the Vulcan drawing was made -- you can see it on my bulletin board, just behind Richard's shoulder. I loved to put jokes, photos, souvenirs from conventions and cartoons on my bulletin board. If you look carefully, you will see then-president Reagan's face pasted onto a Klingon costume -- and someone has captioned it "The Wrath of Reagan." And get a load of Richard and me in our official "Star Trek II" T-shirts -- don't we look sharp (and very '80s)!

Richard Arnold stopped by our office daily (although still working full time at the Los Angeles Westin Bonaventure). This started back in the late '70s-early '80s. Richard's uncanny ability to remember all things "Trek" made him a valuable asset to our office (he often escorted Gene's guests around the studio, giving a running commentary that rivaled the tour guides) and eventually to Paramount Pictures and the excutives. Nearly all the producers of the Trek films benefitted from his vast knowledge and slide collection. Richard and I grew to be good friends, and he gave me this photo of himself, which I kept in my office for many years. Richard still travels the world every year, appearing at hundreds of conventions, showing slides and sharing his knowledge of "Star Trek" with the fans.
